Nina's Tragedies
(official
site)

is in love with his aunt Nina, and it's easy to
see why - she's beautiful, full of life, and kind.
Through his eyes, we share Nina's pain over the
intifada related death of her husband, her joy
at the kindling of new romance, and her discovery
that finding true happiness is never as easy as
it seems.
Director Savi Gabizon infuses
his universe with moments of transcendent humor,
beauty and joy. NINA’S TRAGEDIES is a film unlike
any other - it makes us laugh and cry at the same

like our own.

LOST EMBRACE
Directed by Daniel Burman
(Argentina, 2004, 100 minutes)
A New Yorker Films Release
In Spanish with English Subtitles
Opens Thursday March 17, 2005
@ 7:00 and 9:00pm
Balboa Theatre, 3630 Balboa Street (at 37th Avenue),
San Francisco
LOST EMBRACE conjures up an irresistible
ensemble of engaging and quirky characters that
pursue their dreams with humor, passion and an
infectious generosity of spirit. Daniel Hendler
stars as Ariel, a recent college dropout with
hopes of escaping a career behind the counter
of his mother's lingerie store in a multi-cultural
Buenos Aires shopping mall. The motley merchants
form a hilarious backdrop to Ariel's quest to
secure a Polish passport, which will allow him
to travel the world and have a more fulfilling
life. His search puts him on the trail of his
long-lost father, who left Argentina for Israel
in 1973 to fight in the Yom Kippur War, never
to return….
Thirty-four year-old writer/director Daniel Burman
is one of the most renowned filmmakers of the
new Argentine Cinema and of one of the country's
most active producers, counting Walter Salles'
Motorcycle Diaries in his co-producing credits.
In 2002 Burman won the Sundance/NHK Best Script
award for Every Stewardess Goes to Heaven. His
film Waiting for the Messiah, starring LOST EMBRACE'S
Daniel Hendler, was a 2001 Jewish Film Festival
favorite.
"It's a film of unexpected, almost indescribable
off-center charm that deepens as it goes on."
-- Kenneth Turan, LOS ANGELES TIMES
"A small movie about a small world, but
its modesty is part of what makes it durable and
satisfying." -- A.O. Scott, NEW YORK
TIMES
"A precociously wise meditation on the
crazy quilt of modern identity in general, and
Jewish identity in particular." --
Ella Taylor, L.A. WEEKLY
