Hava AlbersteinChava Alberstein with Les Yeux Noirs

Presented by Stanford Lively Arts and co-sponsored by Hillel at Stanford

Singer/songwriter Chava Alberstein elicits laughter and tears from audiences with her extensive repertoire of Yiddish, Hebrew, and English folk tunes. A national treasure in her native Israel, she has a voice described by Hadassah Magazine as “so warm and mellow it wraps itself around you like a big hug.” In a joyous return to Lively Arts, Alberstein is joined by the infectious Gypsy band Les Yeux Noirs for an uplifting evening of music that celebrates the universal experiences of joy, loss, and hope.

Alberstein’s quivering tenor is sublimely expressive, full of pathos when caressing a ballad, frisky when riding the crest of a traditional dance tune.Entertainment Weekly

Raquy DanzigerRaquy & The Cavemen

A Master Middle Eastern Drummer from NYC. Plus Helene Belly Dancer supreme. Followed by a drum circle.

In a world where Middle Eastern drumming has traditionally been the realm of Arabic males, Raquy Danziger a young woman living in New York City is an anomaly. Audiences are not only surprised by this young woman from America, but captivated by her virtuosity, profound musicality and the passion she brings to performances. When Middle Eastern music extraordinaire Raquy Danziger joined forces with rock musician Liron Peled, the result was dark, powerful Middle Eastern music with a heavy emphasis on Arabic drumming, backed by a band of Arab and Israeli musicians. Raquy, the leader of the group, plays the Iranian Kamanche, a rare and exotic bowed instrument reminiscent of an ancient violin. She is most known for her electrifying performances of original percussion compositions on the Dumbek (Arabic hand drum), which leave audiences awestruck. The group explores the fascinating genre of Progressive Middle-Eastern music with its rich variety of exotic instruments, pulsating rhythms, and evocative scales. Their 1st CD, "DUST" (© 2003) has reached the top 20 on the CMJ chart for multiple weeks. Their latest CD "Jordan" (© 2005) has debuted on the top 30 on the same chart. Raquy and the Cavemen have appeared at Lollapalooza, Central Park Summerstage, FloydFest and PASIC* among others. www.raquyandthecavemen.com
