Israel Education Initiative
The Israel Education Initiative provides opportunities
for the educational community to broaden the knowledge,
deepen the engagement and instill a strong bond with Israel
– all essential to creating an enduring Jewish Identity
and a strong sense of Jewish peoplehood. The
Initiative offers professional development, seminars
in Israel, Living Bridge connections, cultural activities,
curricular material, speakers, exhibits and much more.
The MAKOM partnership:
In November 2003, the Education Department of the Jewish
Agency launched the North American Coalition for Israel
Education - MAKOM - a proactive strategy for fostering
systemic change in the area of Israel education.
MAKOM strives to renew Israel in Jewish life. It seeks
to build the field of Israel education by re-imagining
the emerging place of Israel and Jewish Peoplehood for
this complex era. Through a network of educational and
cultural labs, community role models are mentored to
create innovative programs. The intellectual groundwork,
compelling content and fresh materials are incubated
jointly by North American and Israeli colleagues. MAKOM
is a partnership of the Jewish Agency for Israel and
local North American Jewish Federations.
Current North American communities partnering
in MAKOM:
Bergen County, Cleveland, Metrowest, Miami, New York,
Palm Beach, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, San Francisco,
Toronto and Washington DC
